Stories from a Country Girl: Helpfully Annoying
Whenever I open my FB account, I see a lot of these on my timeline: LISTS. HOW-TOs. THINGS YOU SHOULD or SHOULD NOT DO BY AGE blah blah blah… I’ve read through many of the links for these articles that have those themes. I have to admit, they can be very helpful and informative. More often than not, however, they can get very annoying.
I guess it is the information overload that gets to me. Or it could be how some lists end up sounding like the be-all and end-all of things that a person has to do in order for him or her to be successful/ happy/ etc. It’s like there is only one path to success in whatever goal a person has. I do not agree with that. As helpful as these lists can be, they are not necessarily the best path to follow.
I remember learning in high school that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. That may be true but sometimes in life the shortest and quickest way to something may not always be the best way to go. As cliche as it may sound, it is not always about the destination, it’s the trip. The journey a person takes to get to that goal is often as enriching as the goal itself. So why follow all these lists or let them dictate the path you need to go? I mean, I am sure you can use them as a guide but I think they should just be considered as suggestions instead of instructions. Besides, wouldn’t it be incredibly boring if the world was filled with people all doing the same thing and following the same path? Where is the fun in that?
