Stories from a Country Girl: December 2014

Most of my friends know how much of a couch potato I am when it comes to the US TV Fall season. I am hooked on so many shows (and them some) that I usually do not have a social life when that happens. Sad, I know but considering that I live in the province and going out would entail a one to two hour commute, it is not so bad.I have my share of TV show favorites, shows that I have followed from the beginning that I am loyal to like NCIS (along with NCIS LA and the new NCIS New Orleans), Bones, Castle and Hawaii Five O (do not get me started on that catchy theme song, I love it so much I actually look forward to it). There are other shows, however, that I only follow now just for the sake of wondering what will happen to the characters. I suppose you can say I follow The Vampire Diaries, The Walking Dead, Resurrection and The Blacklist out of loyalty but I am getting a little tired of them. TVD is just getting ridiculous by the minute (and that is saying a lot about a show like that). TWD just feels like the same thing every time: same situations, different locations and villains but that is about it. Resurrection has become so boring it can be a pain to watch. Previously mentioned shows aside, the ones I really love right now are a mix of drama, action, fantasy, historical fiction, suspense and comedy…recognize any of these shows?
There are two new shows that I am completely in love with. The first one is Chasing Life, starring Italia Ricci. It is the story of a young woman diagnosed with cancer and how she deals with life from that point. I was hooked from the first episode and I cannot wait until it comes back this January. Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, I’m Team Leo.

Another show that I love is Jane the Virgin. It is a hilarious comedy about a virgin who became pregnant after she was mistakenly inseminated by her doctor. The combination of different characters and situations that they all get in makes it a very funny and entertaining show. I cannot get over Jane’s father, Rogelio — he is the funniest one there!

As for other favorites, I am very happy about The Flash, especially since the same people who make Arrow produce it. I am a big fan of Arrow and having another superhero show that related to that is something I am very happy to watch. The crossover episodes were my favorite! I hope they do it again sometime in the future.

With The Flash being as promising as expected, I have to admit that Arrow has been exciting this season too. There have been so many twists and surprises (and Olicity moments!) that you simply cannot miss an episode. I wish I could say the same about Gotham. So far, I have been disappointed about how that superhero-themed origins show is going. At least Marvel Agents of Shield has been doing better this season. I think that without the movie tie-ups from the first season the show has more room to develop and I love where it is going so far.

Reign is a show that I have liked from the first season. It is historical fiction that I enjoy watching because of the mix of historical figures with fan fiction(ish) plots combined with modern clothing and music reworked to fit into the period. The second season started a bit slow for me but it is slowly working its way back to the way I loved it in the past. I just wish they would stay away from too much of ghosts and magic and get to real life drama more.

There is a lot of buzz online about another historical fiction type drama based on a series of books: Outlander. I have to admit, I stepped onto that train a little late. With the break (it comes back April) I have been able to catch up and I cannot wait for the next episode! Sam Heughan is someone I have been interested in since I saw him on A Princess for Christmas. I cannot believe how much hotter he has gotten since then!

Are any of you sick of everything Frozen? I know many people are, myself included. Still, it was very amusing to watch three (OK five if you count Sven and Grand Pabby) characters come to life on Once Upon a Time. Of course, it helped a lot that I love the person playing Kristoff (Scott Michael Foster) but it was also interesting to see how the show interpreted their story from where the movie left off. I was getting a little bored with Once Upon a Time but putting in interesting guest characters like the Frozen cast and later Cruella De Ville (played by the lovely Victoria Smurfit – I am a fan!), Maleficent and Ursula is giving it the push it needs to keep viewers excited.

Another show that knows how to keep things interesting is Revenge. I thought they could not take the show further than it has but the twists just keep coming. Killing off Daniel Grayson means that anything can happen on the show and I cannot wait to see where the writers will take it. There are rumors that this may be the last season so there might be a few more surprises coming. Honestly, if they want to end it could they come up with a spin-off featuring Nolan Ross? That is the character I would miss the most!

Speaking of twists, Shonda Land has a lot of those. Scandal gets crazier by the minute but that is what makes the show exciting. The same goes for the new show How to Get Away with Murder. I love the mid-season finale – I did not expect that! Like I said, it is things like that that makes these shows a must-watch!

Before I end this, I need to make a special mention of other shows that I follow, mostly because of the Brits who keep me watching: The Good Wife (Matthew Goode), The New Girl (Julian Morris), Sleepy Hollow (Tom Mison) and The Originals (Joseph Morgan). Three more mentionables: Stalker, Constantine and The Affair. I think that Stalker (and the creepy theme songs that play near the end of each episode) is interesting to watch. It can be a little slow and more on the dramatic side but I am still trying it because it has potential. It is the same thing for Constantine. I did not know what to expect from the show and I am not necessarily impressed, but I still want to see where it is going. The Affair is starting to annoy me, but my love for Joshua Jackson is keeping me glued to it. We’ll see how far I can take watching it. That theme song though…Fiona Apple has not lost her touch. Are there any other shows I should be aware of? Leave a comment below so I can find out!
