Could Not Put It Down – Clare
A little bit of trivia about me: I am a fan of the Shadowhunters books. I was a little late to the party: I read the Mortal Instruments series one after the other only after the last book, The City of Heavenly Fire, was released.
When I found out that a new book, Lady Midnight, was coming out, I waited until the e-book was released and plunged into it as soon as I had it. Set five years from The City of Heavenly Fire, it follows the story of Emma Carstairs and her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, who were the young Shadowhunters that Jace and Clary encountered in the last book.
It was interesting to read about a different set of Shadowhunters, particularly one with a family that a mix of interesting characters. Much like Jace and Clary (in the beginning anyway), Emma and Julian are two people in love who can’t be together (because parabatai cannot feel romantic love for each other). Add to that a mystery about a string of deaths that involve the supernatural and a secret Shadowhunter (who doesn’t even know that he is one), Lady Midnight is a new Shadowhunter adventure that fans like me will surely enjoy. The witty banter that I enjoy from reading books from Cassandra Clare is still here and I love it.
There was a lot going on in the book but it all felt connected: the fairy world, the warlocks, the Clave…so many stories about the people involved were shared (with cameos from The Mortal Instruments characters) and they all worked well to tell the story of this book. Being a viewer of the Shadowhunters TV show on Netflix, I couldn’t help to picture some of the actors in the show as characters in the book (like Emma and Julian are Stephanie Bennett and Michael Daddario, Emeraude Tobia is Cristina and Jon Cor is Mark Blackthorn). Makes me wonder if Cassandra Clare wrote this while helping with the show.
Back to the book, I thought the twist in the end was pretty good and I actually felt for the villain in this story. It was sad that things turned out the way they did — and even more exciting to know that the end teased of an even more exciting book to follow.
Should I even be saying that I can’t wait for the next book? I think that’s a given! Lord of Shadows is bound to reveal more about the story started in this book…although based on the title I am most looking forward to the last one, The Queen of Air and Darkness.
I am such a nerd.
