Clare Henney: Seven TV Shows I Follow

The couch potato in me has been very happy watching my choice shows of the season these past few months. Do you ever watch a series and just follow it for the sake of seeing how it would end even if the show isn’t your thing? There are several shows that I’ve been following but not all of them are my favorites. I’ve been following American Horror Story and The Walking Dead even if blood and gore isn’t my cup of tea just to see how it will go. I was following 666 Park Avenue for the same reason but now I won’t even get to see how it ends because it has already been cancelled. There are, however, shows that I follow because I do like them. Here are seven of those programs that I consider my favorites: Arrow – OK, I admit: the selling point of this one for me is Stephen Amell. Seriously, how can I deny how much of a good example of the male species this guy is? Sure, the guy cannot act, but the looks (and the shirtless workout scenes) are enough to make up for that. The story is good enough to keep me interested so I’ve been following this since the pilot. Maybe in time Amell can improve acting-wise but since this is a comic and it does present itself to be more of that and a little over the top, I guess his acting is OK for now.

Bones – I have been following this show since the first season. Years later and this is still a personal favorite. I think that there are times in this season that this show has become boring and has slacked off but it also comes out with episodes that can still surprise and entertain me enough to think that there’s still hope for it to go further.

Castle – Nathan Fillion is the reason why I love this show. The humor and wit of his character Richard Castle never gets old. There has never been a boring episode with him around.

Revenge – There are so many twists and turns in this show that it could very well be a local soap opera. I think we all have that inner (to borrow a term from the show) “revenge-y” person in us who would like to get even with the people who have wronged us so watching someone do that makes the show interesting.

Beauty and the Beast – I thought that this was going to be a lot like the old series from the 80s with the same name but it’s not. It’s more of a detective series with a love story thrown in that’s similar to the fairy tale – only this time the guy is a beast not because of a curse or genetic disorder but because of a failed government experiment. The leading man and all his brooding is not that attractive to me. Not even a shirtless scene could make me interested. I actually like Ethan, the medical examiner, more. Still, I like his chemistry with Kristen Kreuk and they do have their moments that make me want to see more.

Once Upon a Time – I am a sucker for romance and the whole Snow White and Prince Charming “I-will-always-find-you” shtick is something I’ve been a fan of since the first season. I wasn’t sure how they can take the show further after the curse was released but they have proven me wrong with this second season. I love how they introduce the fairy tale characters and their back stories and it’s always interesting to see them in a different, less glossy light in this show. Plus, I am in awe of Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin. He is such an excellent actor, such a long leap away from his Full Monty days. My hat’s off to him!

The Vampire Diaries – I didn’t follow the series before. Yes, Ian Somerhalder is a good incentive but even with him around I didn’t find the show appealing enough in the beginning. It was only when the originals came in, particularly Klaus, that I became interested in the show. In spite being the “big bad” I think Klaus has redeeming qualities. The way Joseph Morgan plays him is so charming you can’t help but like Klaus even if you know how evil he can be.

There are so many good shows but so little time. As much as I love them, I’m glad that they are all midway through and are going to end soon. It’s time for this potato to get out of the couch and start living with the rest of the world again.
