Clare Henney: September 2009

Apparently, I have this thing for hats. I was looking at my closet and realized I have many of them – of different styles and colors at that. Some of them were hats I’ve bought myself, some others were given to me as gifts from people who seemed to know even before I did that I have a fondness for hats.

I have a trucker hat, some bucket hats, a Jlo-inspired hat (no other way to describe it), baseball caps, an army hat and a couple of knitted hats. I’ve given away a few of them through the years and considering how many of the things I normally wear these days don’t go well with some of my hats, I think it’s about time that these things find other people to wear them.

Lately I’ve taken to wearing something like a do-rag when I go out and need something to put on my head for casual occasions. It’s not a do-rag exactly (well, not in the biker sense), but it’s similar in the sense that it functions like a bandana over my head. It’s just easier and lighter to wear and I can use it as a headband to keep hair off my face – it’s just more practical for me. I found some once at a local store and bought four pieces without knowing what it’s called so when people ask me what it is I just say do-rag even if I’m not sure if it is one.

I just hope I won’t have an urge to collect this do-rag(ish) thing because I don’t even know what they’re called for me to buy one again.
