Clare Henney: One Tree Hill's Touching Finale

One Tree Hill is one of those shows that so many people have grown to love from start to finish. When it ended, I’m sure many of my friends felt that a part of their lives and of their youth has come to an end. I never really followed the show. I’m familiar with the characters and a bit of the story because I’ve watched an episode or two every season but I did not follow it as much as a lot of other people did. Even the finale, which was probably anticipated and seen by every fan of the show, was just something that I happened to catch on TV while I was flipping channels. I was not a fan, but that last episode was very good.

“It’s the oldest story in the world. One day you’re 17 and planning for someday. And then quietly and without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And then someday is yesterday. And this is your life.”

I loved the start of the show when that quote was said. It talked about the character’s journey but I felt like it spoke for all the viewers of the show as well. Even I could relate to it and I felt nostalgic about my life when I heard those lines spoken. The way the show did their flashbacks to reflect on the journey of the characters and how they closed each story for the show was very good because even for someone like me that did not follow the show, I was able to empathize and relate with the characters and feel happy about the conclusion of their stories.

“If you had a friend you knew you’d never see again, what would you say? If you could do one last thing for someone you love, what would it be? Say it. Do it, don’t wait. Nothing lasts forever.”

It was a good way to end the show to remind the fans that nothing lasts forever. Even this show, as good as it was for many, had to end. I love that they gave viewers something to think about and something to inspire them to do something good. That line has kept ringing in my head since the time that I heard it. The series finale was full of memorable lines and these lines were also applied in the way the stories of the characters in the show lived their lives. It was a touching episode, even for a non-fan like me. It was reflective, moving and it was a good way to end.

The last line in the show in itself was inspiring. It was like the characters were telling the viewers that they’ve lived their lives and now the ball is in the viewers’ court (pun not intended). It’s like they’re saying, “ We’ve done our part, now do yours.”

“Make a wish and place it in your heart. Anything you want. Everything you want. Do you have it? Good. Now believe it can come true.”

Many shows/series end with boring finales but One Tree Hill for me was not one of them. I loved it.
