Clare Henney: July 2013

This has become a nightly guilty pleasure for me that will end this week (or next, but I’m guessing this week) on Fox Filipino.

I don’t know how I got started watching this show but as soon as I did I’ve been following it like crazy even with the predictable story and the overused plot line. After soap operas from GMA and ABS-CBN it’s nice to watch one from TV5 for a change. I have mixed reactions about the whole thing but considering that I have been hooked it’s safe to say that I liked it.

Here are the seven thoughts I have on the show Babaeng Hampaslupa:

Who would believe that Freddie Webb is Chinese? I can’t believe that they would cast someone who doesn’t look Chinese as a very traditional Chinese head of the family. Then again, looks is the only thing wrong with him when it came to playing this role. I think former Senator Webb was very convincing as a strong-willed man in charge of his entire family. Yes, he didn’t look the part but he at least acted it – without the stereotypical accent some actors would use to pretend to be Chinese (thank God).

Eddie Garcia is insane in this show. He has so many corny lines but he delivers them in such a way that fits his eccentric character Edward Wong. Again, here’s another guy who doesn’t look Chinese and did not use the stereotypical accent but was still convincing as the brother trying to take over the family business. It was a hoot when Freddie Webb copied the way he delivers his lines in a confrontation scene. That was so good!

Why did they have to make Alex Gonzaga darker? I know she’s supposed to be portraying someone poor but she isn’t exactly mestiza to begin with so what’s the point of slathering all that makeup on her to look less privileged? I don’t think that it was necessary. Just don’t put makeup on her and that would be fine.
