Clare Henney: How Do You Shampoo?

One of my dilemmas when it comes to personal hygiene is shampooing. Like most Filipinos, I shower every day. Sometimes even more than once a day, depending on the weather and on whether or not I worked out that day. My mother often lectures me on my shampoo habits. She says that I shouldn’t shampoo every day because it would make my hair thinner. One of my co-workers also said the same thing, adding that she only shampoos her hair a couple of times a week and then just conditions it. I find that icky for some reason and have been ignoring their advice on it. I can’t imagine working out and sweating hard and not shampooing my hair after. I don’t even want to think of how dirty and smelly my hair would be after a workout. During this past summer alone, I showered twice a day. Sometimes I shampoo twice a day depending on how sweaty I got – I just can’t bring myself to sleep with all that summer heat and grime on my head. It’s probably a big no-no but I guess I’ll cross the bridge of thinning hair when I get there. My hair is still pretty thick so I’m not worried about that right now.
One guilty pleasure I have when shampooing is my use of Head and Shoulders Cool Menthol Shampoo. I LOVE using it; I lather up and leave it on my head for a minute or two until I can feel that mint on my scalp before I rinse it out. It usually keeps my scalp cooler a little longer than usual. I am very loyal to Head and Shoulders and I’ve tried every single type of shampoo they have but I still went back to the menthol one. I even buy it in the biggest container they have!
A friend of mine once gave me a tip to switch up shampoos from time to time. That’s something I’ve tried and I think it’s good for your hair — at least for my hair it has been. Although I am loyal to Head and Shoulders there are times when my hair starts looking a little dull so I switch to a different shampoo (I used to switch to Pantene but these days I’ve used Sunsilk) for a couple of weeks and then go back to my favorite brand. I don’t know how or why it helps my hair to be less dull but it does.
If there’s any big hair sin that I can admit to (because I do not think that my daily shampoo habit is wrong) it’s that I don’t condition my hair as often as I should. Once a week I condition if I remember to and that’s a bit rare. Thankfully I don’t have split ends or tangled hair to deal with (so far). I have dead-straight hair and it doesn’t need that much maintenance so it’s not that big a deal for me. Maybe when I get older and my hair becomes brittle I’d need to pay more attention to conditioning my hair. To be honest though I don’t consider myself to be a high-maintenance girl so there are times when I just want to be practical and cut my long hair off and stick to a short bob. I’ve considered doing that several times this year but everyone around me is against it because they all think I look better with long hair.
Well, the majority wins for now but if I happen to be alone and near a salon, I just might have that bob before the year ends.
