Clare Henney: Big Foot

If there’s one thing about me that I wish were different it would be my feet. I have big feet; my shoe size ranges from 8-10 depending on the brand and the style of the shoe. When I was younger it was not that big a deal because it meant that I could wear adult-style shoes but now that I’m older it is a cause of frustration on my part. Whenever I go out to shop for shoes, my shoe size is always a problem because the ones I like usually don’t have them in my size. It’s gotten to the point where I hate shopping for shoes already. When I go to SM Department store to check out their large-size shoes I get even more irritated because even if they do accommodate people like me by having a line for us, the shoes are usually plain in comparison to the shoes from their regular-sized line. It’s like having plus-sized clothes available but they all look frumpy and fugly.
These days I settle for flip-flops because it’s that type of footwear that usually has my size available. I’d love to try wearing trendier shoes but my selection is quite limited because of my feet. As much as I’d love to go all over the country just to search for shoes that fit, it’s just too much trouble for someone like me who likes to keep things uncomplicated.
I remember watching the scene from Cinderella where Drizella was trying on Cinderella’s glass slipper when I was little — all I could think of while watching was that the girl had really big feet! I never thought that I would think back to that now that I’m older and having a hard time finding shoes for myself.
Sometimes I wonder if I should have worn those shoes that Chinese women were made to wear back in the day to keep their feet small. It’s not that the concept is a good thing, I know it’s a form of abuse and I would not wish it on anyone. I just wonder if that could have helped me if I had known my feet would get this big. I’ve had people tease me that my feet would get bigger if and when I get pregnant – that’s scary! Will I even have shoes to buy when that happens? I used to dress up as Cinderella in my grade school storybook parades. Who would have thought I’d end up more Drizella than Cinderella?
