Banana Split, Anyone? – Clare
I remember years ago, when I was still new to the place that I now live in, someone offered me some Banana Split. My initial reaction was pleasant amusement because I was in a fairly rural community and the thought that they had banana splits here was a real surprise.
Before I could picture bananas and ice cream however, I found out that the definition of banana split around here is something completely different.
The local banana split is actually made up of a few pieces of boiled saba bananas with brown sugar syrup and mixed with evaporated milk and ice. I remember having this snack as a child but I always thought it was either called Saba Con Yelo or Minatamis na Saging (Sweetened Banana/Banana in Syrup) Turns out I’ve been having banana splits all these years!
This is without a doubt less expensive to prepare than the whole ice cream and bananas version and I’d have to say it comes close to being as refreshing as Halo-halo and Mais Con Yelo.
To be honest though, I really do miss having the kind of banana split that I used to know and love. The kind we used to have when we were kids and used to go to Magnolia Ice Cream shops for (oops, major age give-away!).
Oh well, this would have to do for now.
