A Middle-Aged Woman’s Dream | Clare
What would you do if you were in your 40s and you had to start over? How would you play it? I’m sure pretending (and living like) you were 26 again was not one of the ideas that came to mind.
That, however, is what the TV show Younger is all about. A recently-divorced woman named Liza (played by Sutton Lenore) is forced to go back to work after years of being a stay at home wife and mother only to discover that she is too old to start over. After the suggestion of her best friend, she gets a makeover and applies for (and gets) a position at Empirical, one of the top publishing firms as an assistant.
During the course of the first two seasons, she gains new friends, a hot young boyfriend, a new love interest at work and a new lease on life as she gets to enjoy the life she gave up when she got married and started a family.
Younger is fun to watch. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and has a lot of quirky characters that you get to know and get attached to as you watch the show. The fashion, the language and the thoughts are mostly from a younger perspective and for that alone it is interesting to watch. I once read that it is like a younger Sex and the City and I have to admit that it does have that kind of feel. I like that there is a show that is about this age demographic because mostly it is an in-between niche neglected by other shows.
The cast of Younger is such a good ensemble. Sutton Lenore is great to watch: her delivery is always spot on and you cannot help but feel for her through every single thing that she goes through. I also love seeing Hilary Duff as a more mature actress. Last I watched her was when my little sister watched her on Lizzie Maguire — yes I know she married, had a kid and divorced already but this is true. I love her portrayal of a loyal friend and driven young editor out to prove herself. As for Nico Tortorella — are there any words? He is Josh. He just is! So sweet and accepting of Liza and I don’t know if a guy like that still exists!
BUT, my favorite actress in this show would have to be Miranda Shor, who plays Diana, Liza’s boss and Marketing Head of Empirical. The situations that she gets herself into and the way things play out for her character is one of the highlights of the show for me. More Diana please!
Another thing I love about this show is that it takes what most people have probably wished about their 20s: to be that young and have those opportunities but to know what you know now when you are older and wiser…that is a really good combination. Now if only she didn’t have to lie about her age right?
If you’re interested in a fun show that has romance, comedy, hot guys and is about starting over, this might be a show for you. With the current season over, I am looking forward to what will happen on season 3!
